Countdown Begins For Endeavour Launch Tuesday

Darting through thunderstorms that blanketed central Florida, the astronaut crew for the next space shuttle mission arrived at Kennedy Space Center last night in advance of next week's launch of Endeavour on STS-123. Running four hours behind schedule due to the weather, the crew landed in heavy rain at 1:15 a.m. EST.

Endeavour has landed!

Shuttle Endeavour just glided to a stop on the runway at Kennedy Space Center, bringing seven astronauts home after a mission to the international space station. The successful nighttime landing was just the 16th for KSC and the 68th overall for the Florida space port. Endeavour spent a record 12 days docked at the outpost, which was expanded with the addition of a Japanese research module. "Welcome home, Endeavour...congrats to the entire crew on a very successful mission," astronaut Jim Dutto

Florida's 'Space Coast' looks beyond the Shuttle

NPR: Along Florida's "Space Coast," people are worrying about what the end of the shuttle program will mean for workers and the region's economy. For many who live and work here, the looming end of the space shuttle brings back memories of the 1970s. Within just a few years of men landing on the Moon, the workforce at the Kennedy Space Center was cut from 25,000 employees to less than half that. The ripple effects from those layoffs, Koller recalls, devastated Florida communities from Titusville

Nighttime landing facts

If Endeavour gets to land at 8:39 p.m. tonight, the ship will be making the 16th night landing at Kennedy Space Center since the shuttle program began. The last nighttime flight home was on Sept. 21, 2006, when shuttle Atlantis soared back to KSC at 6:21 a.m. That return was considered "night" because it occurred 48 minutes before sunrise.

One more time around the planet

Shuttle Endeavour will not be coming home on its first opportunity due to low clouds over the landing strip at Kennedy Space Center. NASA is now shooting for the second chance at 8:39 p.m. NASA television commentator Kyle Herring just said the weather is "trending" in a positive way. The clouds may be out of the area in time for that chance. Stay tuned.

XCOR Lynx Bringing Sports Car-esque Travel to Space Mini Spaceship

A two-seater spaceship smaller than a private jet that will take people up for a 25-minute space flight, is being launched in Mojave today. According to the Lynx Mark 1's makers, Xcor Aerospace, the spacecraft is expected to be at the test-flight stage by 2010. The two-seater craft has room for one passenger besides the pilot and will be, I guess, one way for a wealthy passenger to discover just how lonely it is 38 miles above the earth. More info, plus an animated video, below. "Our company'

Endeavour is on its way back to KSC

Shuttle Endeavour has started firing its twin engines in a "de-orbit" burn that starts its journey home to Kennedy Space Center. The ship is expected to touch down at 8:39 p.m. NASA went down to the wire with its landing decision tonight, evaluating clouds over the KSC runway and even asking Endeavour Commander Dominic Gorie if he felt comfortable with cover at about 5,000 feet. The experienced pilot said he was ready for those conditions, and NASA cleared the ship for its flight home. The shut

Weather under review

NASA is evaluating the clouds over Kennedy Space Center's three-mile landing strip as a possible show-stopper for shuttle Endeavour's first chance tonight to fly home. Brent Jett, an astronaut and former shuttle commander, is flying the skies above KSC in weather reconnaissance and reporting back to meteorologists at Mission Control. Meanwhile, the seven astronauts on Endeavour are plugging along on their pre-landing preparations. They've started drinking large amounts of fluid to get ready fo

Clouds rolling in

Mission Control just informed the crew of shuttle Endeavour that weather is currently "no go" for their first landing opportunity at 7:05 p.m. this evening at Kennedy Space Center. NASA still has some time to evaluate conditions and determine whether or not it will bypass the first chance. Clouds appear to be the main problem. The shuttle pilot has to be able to see the runway clearly as he makes his approach. Endeavour would have to fire its engines in the "de-orbit burn" at 5:58 p.m. if it's

Weather still looking iffy

Mission Control just radioed the control with mixed messages. Astronaut Jim Dutton told the crew to begin drinking fluids again in preparation for the return to gravity. But then he bemoaned that he wished he had "better news" regarding the weather for the shuttle's second landing opportunity at 8:39 p.m. "We do see an improving trend in terms of the weather thinning...but the weather forecast is undecided at this point," Dutton told Endeavour's commander Dominic Gorie.
